The incredible hype of postseason and All-Star games write some of the hobby's finest stories; important "milestone" games litter the landscape of baseball history and become part of hobby lore: Christy Mathewson's shutouts in the 1905 Series; Babe Ruth's called shot Carl Hubbell's strikeouts; Bobby Thomson's blast Willie Mays' catch Mazeroski's home run Bucky Dent's shot into the net Joe Carter's walk-off Derek Jeter's flip. To a lot of us they tell the story of baseball. To the more dedicated fan however baseball magic can happen at any time - and sometimes has nothing to do with baseball whatsoever. And that's why an otherwise meaningless April game in 1976 yielded one of the most important and memorable things ever to happen on a baseball field. On April 25 in the fourth inning of a game between the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers Cubs outfielder Rick Monday noticed two fans run outo the field nearby him and incredulously saw them unfurl an American flag doused in lighter fluid. Monday a reserve in the United States Marine Corps noticed the pair attempting to light a match to set the flag alight. And then he went into action racing toward them scooping the flag off the ground and running away from the pair saving the American flag. 26 167 fans stood and applauded Monday as the Dodger Stadium scoreboard read "Rick Monday - You Made a Great Play." Years later it remains one of the most memorable baseball "plays" in history. Presented here is a ticket stub from that game a field box seat for which a fan paid $4.50 to watch a United States Marine save the American Flag during a meaningless baseball game in April. In VG/EX condition with a stronger presentation the stub does exhibit some mild surface wear that would reduce its technical grade but the display quality is quite exceptional. As significant an April ticket stub as there will ever be.
