The 1978 season was one of the most exciting and memorable baseball seasons in history with the well-oiled Boston Red Sox machine taking an early lead in the American League running away with the Eastern Division by the All-Star break. Injured underperforming and riddled with controversy the defending champion New York Yankees limped into the All-Star break 11 1/2 games behind the Red Sox eventually bottoming out at 14 games back. But things came together for the Yankees just as they began to fall apart for Boston and the Bronx Bombers made a furious comeback making up all 14 games and finishing the season in a dead heat with Boston forcing a one-game playoff for all the marbles: the AL East division. Known as the "Bucky Dent Game " that playoff game is the stuff of history. Heading into the sixth inning trailing 2-0 the Yankees got two baserunners off singles by Chris Chambliss and Roy White bringing to the plate the light-hitting shortstop Bucky Dent. After fouling a ball off his foot and causing a stoppage in play Dent - using a bat given to him by teammate Mickey Rivers - hit a three-run home run into the net above the Green Monster in left field putting the Yankees ahead by a run. After scoring another run in the 7th on a Thurman Munson double and another in the 8th on a Reggie Jackson homer the Yankees fought off a two-run 8th inning rally and won the game 5-4. The Yankees of course went on to beat the Kansas City Royals in the League Championship Series and won the World Series against the LA Dodgers. Presented here is a ticket stub from the "Bucky Dent Game " featuring the image of Hall of Famer and Red Sox hero Carl Yastrzemski. It is often Yaz' classic image leaning up against the Green Monster and pawing at the warning track dirt which is used to describe the team's frustration over the playoff loss. This photo captures the great Red Sox left fielder in better times. The stub presents well but does suffer from edge and corner wear partiuclarly at the perforations which results in some fraying at the edges. Despite this a difficult-to-find stub from a very important legendary game.
