Jose Pagan was a Puerto Rican-born utility player who played for fifteen seasons with San Francisco Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. He appeared in two World Series driving in the winning run in Game 7 of the 1971 World Series for Pittsburgh. A longstanding Pirates fan favorite Pagan died in 2011. Pagan's minor league career began in 1955 with the Class C El Dorado Oilers of the Cotton States League but he worked his way up the ladder quickly making his way to the Phoenix Giants of the Pacific Coast League where he played alongside Willie McCovey Manny Mota and a number of other future major league stars. Pagan batted .312 with 19 home runs and made the PCL All-Star team that season. Pagan the starting shortstop also factored into the South's 5-2 victory over the north scoring the game's 4th run on a single by Mike Krsnich. Pagan's teammate Willie McCovey played first base in the game. Presented here is Pagan's trophy from the game a beautiful piece standing nearly 27" in height composed of wood with engraved gold plating on the front panels. The engraved plaque reads "Pacific Coast League/1959/All Star Game/San Diego Calif." with Pagan's name engraved on the trophy's upper tier. The piece does exhibit some normal wear along with some soiling and patina on the gold plated components. Some small abrasions are also evident here and there. An interesting piece one of just two we have encountered in the hobby (the other went unsold at auction several years ago) a tremendous PCL-related item once given to a Pittsburgh Pirates favorite.
