The one-two-punch of the Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays rookie cards in the 1951 Bowman set is a powerhouse in postwar collecting; the two players were the biggest stars of their era two rookies patrolling centerfield in the biggest baseball city in the country during its golden era. For today's hobbyists the cards represent a significant challenge not due to scarcity but due to condition - the cards are often both found off-center and with centering commanding a premium in today's hobby properly-oriented cards are in high demand. Presented here is such an item - a Willie Mays rookie card nearly perfectly centered on the canvas. Graded VG+ 3.5 by PSA the card does exhibit soft corners and surface wear as well as a very light wrinkle down the center. Despite that the color of the card is extremely strong the image quality outstanding well within the standards of the grade. The half-point "bump" is clearly a result of eye appeal created by the centering. A tremendous card.
