NOTE: We have COMPLETELY changed the description of this lot. Incredible oversized photo (mount measures 9 3/4" x 11 3/4" the photo is approximately 8" x 10") picturing a Highlanders player lunching to catch a throw ahead of an unidentified diving player returning to the bag. The outfield fence of Hilltop Park looms in the background. The photo is wonderfully composed the mount exhibiting moderate wear with some very mild surface abrasions and silvering visible on the photo itself but nothing to distract from what is ultimately a beautiful shot. Photos picturing Hilltop Park are rare this is a beautiful specimen. Our original description dated this photo to 1903 and identified the Highlanders player as infielder Ernie Courtney. This information came to us courtesy of a handwritten sheet of paper that was included with the photo along with some examination of other 1903 photos. Within a few hours of the auction going live we were contacted by dedicated collector Ken Samoil. Ken provided ample information to illustrate that the player in the photo could not possibly be Ernie Courtney because the photo itself does not date to 1903 the only season with which Courtney played with the Highlanders. Based on the uniform and cap worn by the player it is conclusive that the photo dates to 1908. With that in mind we are unable to conclusively identify the player. The semi-smile on his face along with the angle at which his head is turned makes it difficult for us to see enough facial features to make a comparison. As such we will need to go with "Unidentified Highlander Infielder." We welcome any input that might help us make a more conclusive identification and we thank Ken Samoil for his generous assistance.
