Extremely underrated 19th Century baseball set part of a 50-card issue of "Champions of Games and Sport" issued by the Rochester NY-based Kimball Tobacco company in 1887. The unique cards featuring beautiful full-color lithographs of the player portraits occupying the top two-thirds of each card with an action illustration and player information on the bottom third. As with the competitive issues produced by Goodwin and Allen & Ginter the cards were meant to be stored in an album. Despite the lack of a Hall of Famer in the collection the Kimballs cards are scarce and desirable and seldom make themselves available as individual cards much less a complete set. Each of the cards has been graded by SGC with Hardie Henderson and Tip O'Neil grading VG 40 and Ernie Burch and Dell Darling graded GOOD+ 35. All four cards present well for the respective grades the color strong and vivid on each with each card suffering from mild surface wear and soiling on the reverse. Still an exceptional grouping of difficult-to-find cards from this interesting 19th Century issue.
