Dick Schaap was a legendary sportswriter author television journalist and broadcaster. He began his career in 1964 as a columnist with Newsweek eventually becoming editor of SPORT magazine. He was a correspondent with the NBC Nightly News and the Today Show ABC World News Tonight 20/20 was the host of Schaap One on One with ESPN Classic hosted the radio program The Sporting Life with Dick Schaap on ESPN Radio and wrote a number of best-selling sports books. During his career Schaap earned five Emmy awards the Associate Press’ Red Smith Award and was inducted into the Nassau County Sports Hall of Fame. He passed away tragically in 2001 due to complications from hip replacement surgery. We have been fortunate enough to have received on consignment a grouping of documents photos awards manuscripts and scrapbooks that originated with Schaap’s estate. Absolutely massive collection of Dick Schaap's personal videotapes. Only a fraction of the collection are represented here there are dozens of tapes filling multiple boxes. The majority of the tapes are VHS format and contain individual episodes hosted or produced by Schaap. Some include ESPN SportsCentury shorts segments for ABCNews shorts aired on the Classic Sports Network 20/20 and the like. Many of these segments are not available elsewhere. Also included are several 3/4" professional broadcast quality tapes. We took the liberty of sending those tapes out to a company that transfers old professional tapes to digital format and had those tapes digitized. All were final produced segments of various Schaap-produced shows. Most interesting was a video chronicling a 1975 testimonial dinner for Muhammad Ali. Ali and Crystal became close friends after that and Crystal referred to it when eulogizing Ali at his memorial. Chuck Wepner also delivered a fine roast of Ali reciting a poem in advance of their classic fight. Included in the lot is a thumb drive containing the digitized files off these 3/4" professional tapes along with the tapes themselves. It should be noted that there are dozens and dozens of tapes and the winning bidder should expect that they will be extremely heavy. Shipping charges will be substantial but we can arrang
