Beautiful 1912 letter on the stationery of the New Haven Clock company written to Yale football pioneer Walter Camp to All-American footbal player and Yale coach George Brewster Chadwick. Camp writes Chadwick with concerns over the direction of Yale coaching feeling that perhaps they are not planning enough ahead. The text of the letter reads as follows: Dear George:- I am writing to one or two of the old captains and hope that through their influence we can check the tendency to friction which seems for the last two or three years to have developed in the coaching and come back to our old method where we did not have to worry very much about the result because we always had some one play in advance of the other teams. Please understand I do not for a moment wish to force my advice where it is unwelcome. I have however sometimes wondered if any of our former captains feel strongly enough about the assistance I gave them in their day to save our present teams from starting off on a foolish track and then coming to a death bed repentance the last two weeks of the season. Will you drop me a line if you find the time and later on we may arrange for a dinner or meeting to take the matter up. Yours very truly Walt The signature and inscription at the bottom of the letter are written in the hand of Camp. The letter itself is in GOOD condition with considerable wear at the folds and minor edge tears as well with small holes at the center of the letter where the folds meet. That said the display value is strong on ornate letterhead with handwritten notes from the Father of American Football still serving as an unofficial advisor to the Yale squad despite having a full-time job at his family clock business. An excellent piece of football history. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
