The death of a celebrity the size of Babe Ruth is a monumental one; with the exception of the passing of Muhammad Ali it would be difficult to find a celebrity whose passing was as newsworthy during our lifetime. Seventy years later Ruth remains one of the most famous people on the planet still known - and rarely questioned - as the greatest ever to play a sport that has featured thousands of players who were his athletic superior. Presented here is the August 17 1948 New York Daily Mirror announcing Ruth's passing electing to picture the sports hero not in his Yankee pinstripes but as a suffering man in a bathrobe no longer the superhero of his youth. The paper is mounted inside a heavy modern frame we cannot ascertain details about condition without removing the frame. However the display value of the piece is strong the image clean.
