The amount of knowledge included in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Co by Masson Miller and Gonsowski is impossible to quantify; it is along with a full run of Old Cardboard and the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards one of the reference materials we consider indispensible. If you are reading this auction listing and you don't own this book we strongly urge you to put down our catalog visit eBay and find a copy immediately. All this is a lengthy introduction to explain to you that thanks to Mssrs Masson Miller and Gonsowski we know that Phenomenal Smith gave himself his nickname (his born name is John Francis Gammon) after striking out 16 batters in an 1885 game with the Newark Domestics of the Eastern League during which he did not allow a ball to be hit out of the infield. Smith's performance was so dominant in fact that he claimed he was so good that he didn't need his team to win. This comment sat so well with his teammates that they committed 14 errors in his next outing liosing the game 18-5.
