Though it was informally known at the time that the Brooklyn Dodgers wished to relocate to Los Angeles Dodger fans hoped well into the 1957 season that the eventuality would never occur. Owner Walter O'Malley understood that the Dodgers despite their success on the field would consistently have trouble filling Ebbets Field and could not find a different location in Brooklyn in which to construct a new park. By the 1956 offseason Los Angeles was the clear favorite. Without a formal announcement the team played its final game at Ebbets Field in front of just 6 702 die-hard Dodger fans the Brooklyn club defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates behind a superb pitching performance by Danny McDevitt. The Dodgers finished third that season; the lack of playoffs meant that the September 24 game would be the last at the great ballpark. In early October the team made the formal announcement that it would be relocating to Los Angeles for the 1958 season creating wounds that have not fully healed today; some New York area families still mourn the loss of their beloved Bums like it happened yesterday. Presented is a lovely official Program and Score Card from that final game at Ebbets Field. Well-preserved the game is scored in ink neatly in the centerfold. Handwritten on the cover is "September 24 1957 - Last Game At Ebbets Field." Aside from the writing and some minor toning the scorecard is in excellent condition some minor wear to the edges corners and spine consistent with its age as well as some very minor discoloration on the cover which is likely a very light moisture stain. A wonderful document of one of baseball's early heartbreaks.
