Nearly 70 years in our rearview mirror Roy Campanella is often viewed in the immense shadow of his teammate Jackie Robinson. But the sixth black player to make the major leagues was a superstar and a Hall of Famer with three MVP awards to his name. A rock behind the plate he appeared in at least 100 games for nine straight seasons (a then-record) and was known for his durability which made his horrible 1958 traffic accident all the more shocking. Presented is a stunning news service photo of Campanella taken just months after his accident dated July 17 1958. His famous smile overpowers the reality of his condition as it did for his entire life. The photo is in VG/EX condition with some waviness and a minor tear at the top edge. The slug has become detached but is still present. An outstanding photo depicting one of the game's great heroes.
