On July 4 of 1914 the Boston Braves were in last place 15 games out of first. They then proceeded to go on a 33-11 run which included a nine-game winning streak to pull into a tie for first place on August 25. By the end of the season behind manager George Stallings the team winished in first place with a 94-59 record an amazing 10.5 games ahead of the second place Giants. Propelled by outstanding pitching performances by Bill James (26-7 1.90) Dick Rudolph (26-10 2.35)and Lefty Tyler (16-13 2.69) the team finished fourth in baseball in runs scored despite a team batting average below the league average. The team then went on to sweep the powerhouse Philadelphia Athletics who finished the season with a 99-53 record. The first two games of the series were held at Shibe Park in Philadelphia the Braves winning both games and defeating future Hall of Famers Chief Bender (7-1) and Eddie Plank (1-0). This beautiful press pass admitted one journalist to the press box at Shibe Park where he/she could have seen both of those games. Unfortunately the journalist's name does not appear on the pass anywhere but it most certainly was in attendance at the game. The round pass is in remarkable condition given its age with very little wear. The reverse reveals the likely reason as it does exhibit what appears to be some very minor staining and paper loss from being affixed to a scrapbook. Such scrapbooks preserved many similar passes and tickets over the years something collectors can be thankful for today despite the fact that their telltale signs do detract from the technical grades of the items in question. Still a beautiful pass and an important document of one of the game's all-time beloved teams the Miracle Braves.
