One of 40 subjects featured in this 1920s Cuban issue this card of Hall of Fame outfielder Cristobal Torriente has eye appeal that far surpasses its technical grade. The primary culprit lies in chipping and edge wear along the right side along with some minor surface soiling. The MK qualifier refers to the number 78 written in red ink on the reverse; such red ink numerals are frequently seen on the reverse of some Cuban issues. The card does exhibit very minor staining on the reverse consistent with the issue; the cards were intended to be affixed into an album where many were discovered years later. Cristobal Torriente won two batting titles in the Cuban winter league and played a nine-game series against the New York Giants in 1920. During the series Torriente outhit Babe Ruth who was playing on the Giants' roster for the series. Torriente was one of the greatest ballplayers to hail from Cuba and was part of the introductory class of the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame. Torriente was often called the "Black Babe Ruth " and played for many great Negro League teams as well as JL Wilkinson's "All-Nations" team. Torriente was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006 one of the greatest players to ever set foot on a field. An extremely rare example of one of Cuban baseball's greatest players the only example to have been graded by PSA.
