The National Chicle R311 Premiums long purported to have been produced in 1936 were oversized photos that were assumed to be premiums given away to collectors who redeemed 15 wrappers of Diamond Stars gum (the gum issued with the Diamond Stars cards produced between 1934-36 by National Chicle). Presented here is an extremely rare salesman's sample of R311s which along with their original envelope explain precisely how the premiums were distributed. The outer envelope identifies the contents as "The 1935 Baseball Card Gum Diamond Stars Chewing Gum." It clearly describes how each of the "7 Photographic Art Pictures" are stacked in each box of Diamond Stars and that new pictures were to be added each month. Customers could redeem 15 wrappers right at the point of sale for one of the seven photos. The contents of the package are five of the seven R311 photos (Pie Traynor Earl Averill Joe Cronin Jimmy Dykes and the Boston Red Sox) wrapped in a "belly band" advertising the premiums. The belly band wraps the photos to a piece of heavy cardboard with a hole at the top for hanging. The advertisement was to be displayed nearby the Diamond Stars Gum and cards. This is an incredibly rare piece in outstanding condition. Very little wear is evident on the advertisement itself wich the exception of some toning as well as age-related separation along the sides of the belly band. The envelope is in GOOD condition repaired by clear tape at the top left and right and some very minor tears elsewhere. Some mild stains and folds related to its use are evident as well. Regardless an exceptional piece a very rare companion piece to the Diamond Stars gum and R311 premiums.
