1949 letter from Hall of Famer Branch Rickey then president of the Brooklyn Dodgers to Gus Steiger of the New York Daily Mirror ostensibly in thanks for organizing what was likely the Baseball Writers Association of America dinner of 1949. Rickey's letter reads as follows: Dear Gus: I think you did a fine job -- the Baseball Writers Dinner job I mean. Cardinal Spellman's prayer closing his address was in my judgement the peak point of dais performance in the whole history of the Writers' dinners. In literary quality in inspirational content and politico-religious philsophy - in my book it was tops. Whoever had to do with his appearance should have a special vote of thanks. I think the Chapter is to be congratulated in having you for its president this year. Sincerely yours Branch Rickey President. The letter is in GOOD condition with some age-related discoloration likely the result of its method of storage. Rickey's signature is strong though slightly uneven ink makes it appear a bit faded. Still an excellent letter with interesting content regarding the BBWAA dinner of 1949. COA from James Spence Authentication.
