1909 saw future Hall of Fame outfielder Max Carey return to Concordia College to complete his pre-ministerial program before pursuing baseball as a full-time venture. Presented here are three photographs from that final year.First is a standard-sized cabinet photo of the Concordia baseball team. Posed outdoors likely on the bench at a ball field the team is surrounded by equipment. Carey (left of the gentleman in the sweater) appears relaxed and confident his first season of Central League baseball just ahead of him. The cabinet mount is in good condition with typical corner and edge wear along with some very minor staining. The photo itself is sharp and well-preserved with three players marked with "X" marks in pencil. The cabinet reverse identifies the three players marked with "X"s (Pop Carey and Gallmeier) and also dates the photo to 1909-10. Aside from the aforementioned pencil markings there is a large paper pull on the reverse likely from scrapbook removal. The second photo is a much smaller cabinet-stype photo measuring approximately 6" x 4". Depicting the baseball team outdoors in a much more casual pose the team is laid back with equipment arranged around them for the photo. Carey sits third from right though the photo is small enough to require magnification to make out details. This cabinet appears to be in VG/EX condition on the front with a very strong and well-preserved photo. The reverse is notated in pencil as follows: "Taken at Culver April 24 "09 Score - C.C. 8 - Culver 3 " indicating a Concordia victory at Culver on the date of the photo. The third photo is an oversized (14" x 12") cabinet photo depicting the six members of the 1909 Concordia College basketball team. Though the mount has sustained significant damage (considerable edge and corner wear resulting in the complete removal of part of the bottom right corner along with some water staining along the bottom edge) the photo quality is outstanding - sharp and clear withe virtually no wear to the corners and edges and only minor surface wear. A previous owner has marked four of the six player names on the mount: Carnarius (Carey who stands in the back row center) Schusmaw Sauer and Gallmeier. Despite wearing really unfortunate shoes unfit for basketball the team is posed confidently inside an academic building or photo studio.
