Approximately 9 3/4" x 9 3/4" square this is a spectacular Reach Sporting Goods advertising piece featuring a photo composite of the 1909 American League Champion Detroit Tigers surrounded by pouncing tigers a Reach brand baseball at the top of the image and a generic ballplayer at the bottom. 23 player images are depicted each in street clothes including Jugh Jennings (HOF) Ty Cobb (HOF) and Sam Crawford (HOF). The piece appears to have once been a square though clipped corners and hand-trimmed edges have somewhat reduced its size. Technical grade is fair to poor though this is largely due to the writing on the reverse (described below) as well as the trimming; some age-related soiling and wrinkles do not greatly impact the display quality of this outstanding piece nor does the slight silvering visible in the photographic art. It is the reverse however that is fascinating - along with several personal stamps ostensibly from its owner George M Zindler is a handwritten listing of the players depicted on the obverse along with the position of each player depicted. We were able to find a George M. Zindler who lived in the Detroit area during this time; he would have been approximately 19 years old in 1905. He apparently was the Vice President of the Marsh-Zindler Company Inc of Detroit which sold "Lamps Rugs Baby Carriages and Refrigerators." Mr. Zindler was apparently quite the Tigers fan and we are grateful that he preserved this outstanding beautiful advertising piece for us.
