Obtained by mailing coupons found in Turkey Red Old Mill and Fez cigarettes to an address in Jersey City Turkey Red premiums are cabinet-like cards printed on heavy stock and issued in two series punctuated by a group of 25 boxers (classified as T9). The second series of which this Fred Tenney is one were issued either with checklists printed on the reverse or oversized ads for Turkey Red cigarettes. Tenney who broke in with the Boston Beaneaters in 1894 played there until 1908 when he was traded to the New York Giants where he played the 1908 and 1909 seasons. In 1910 he was a player-manager for a minor league team before signing a two-year contract with the Boston Rustlers beginning in 1911. The result of this movement from New York to Boston created a variation where two Tenney cards were produced - this one which depicts Tenney with the Giants (where he played in 1909) and a second (also featured in this auction) which depicts Tenney with both New York and Boston.This is the New York variation of the Tenney card graded EX 60 by SGC. It is difficult to continuously refer to the T3s in this collection as "stunning " but once again there are very few other adjectives that come to mind when attempting to describe the extraordinary color and glossiness of the surface. In the case of this Tenney we feel the grade is accurate for the simple reason that there is some light edge wear and a few pulls at the corners that prohibit the card from attaining a higher grade. However this card like most other T3s is extremely difficult to find in grades above this; in fact there are just four that currently exist all graded by PSA.
