Extraordinary letter from Mickey Cochrane to his wife dated December 20 1944. During late 1944 Cochrane served as a Lt. Commander in the United States Navy and was stationed in the Pacific while his wife Mary remained at their Montana ranch. The letter was clearly sent while Cochrane was away as he refers to his brother Archie and the Montana car dealership he owned. Most notable is Cochrane's declaration "I wouldn't be surprised if the kid was in action now if the reports from the other front are correct. I haven't heard anything from him so if you get any word let me know what is going on." Cochrane's son Gordon enlisted in the US Military the previous January and indeed was shipped out to Europe in October of 1944. Sadly he was killed on the battlefield in Holland just two months after this letter was written. The elder Cochrane of course was devastated. Cochrane signed the letter twice - once "Mike" (his family nickname) and "GS Cochrane." Both signatures are in outstanding condition bold and clean. The paper itself is slightly worn with some toning and minor stains consistent with traveling halfway around the world in 1944 and subsequently being stored among family documents for many years. An extremely personal piece a window into the life of one of the game's greatest catchers.
