The 1950 Dallas Eagles of the Texas League were a AA-level team with a host of players that eventually played in the Majors none more notable than pitcher Bob Buhl. The team's owner Dick Burnett set a goal of breaking the Texas League Opening Day attendance record in hopes of besting the record of 16 018 set in 1930 by the Fort Worth Cats. Since the team's home ballpark only seated 10 500 he moved the opening game to the Cotton Bowl football stadium and then "signed" Hall of Famers Ty Cobb Mickey Cochrane Charlie Gehringer Tris Speaker Dizzy Dean Travis Jackson and "Home Run" Baker along with Duffy Lewis and Charlie Grimm (who was the Eagles' manager). Those players took the field in a spectacular gimmick with Dean opening the game by walking the first batter arguing with the home plate umpire and storming off the field. His "teammates" walked off the field in solidarity and the "real" Eagles took the field after just one batter. Attendance that day was a staggering 53 378 a Texas League record that still stands. Presented is a colorful ticket stub from that very game against the Tulsa Oilers a colorful stub in G-VG condition with some minor creasing and wear at the corners and edges. More important than the condition however is a strong Ty Cobb signature applied over the seating chart on the ticket reverse. Cobb can obviously be placed at the event that day lending credence to the signature's authenticity and also creating an outstanding piece of memorabilia that comes with a tremendous story one of the many mid-century publicity stunts that made the game so great. Note that while the signature does not currently carry an LOA it originates from one of the most reputable autograph sources in the hobby and is covered by our own guarantee. Please see our Auction Rules for more information on our guarantee and bid with extreme confidence.
