Issued in the late 1890s by the National Tobacco Works the N566 Newsboy cabinet set was a massive set that contained hundreds of popular athletes actresses locations politicians and more. The 4 1/2 x 6 1/2" sepia photographs were mounted on a variety of cardboard backings many cream in color but in some cases gray with a green border and text. Newsboy cabinets are very highly desirable particularly due to the extraordinary scarcity and value of the 14 baseball players that have been discovered. More than 600 cabinets have been discovered thus far with multiple variations possible. Mike Tiernan spent his entire 13-year major league career patrolling rightfield for the Giants (also pitching five games in his debut season of 1887) finishing his career with a .311 batting average and 106 home runs. Tiernan was known as a quiet softspoken gentleman. White this Newsboy cabinet of Tiernan has been graded POOR 10 by SGC due to significant wear and waviness from what appears to be moisture damage along with some minor tears the image itself displays very well. With cards like Newsboys which are in short supply condition-shopping is often not an option. This example despite the technical grade is as attractive a 10 as you are likely to see particularly from such a difficult issue.
