The early 1930s were probably the most interesting and creative period in the evolution of baseball cards. During that period some of the most popular and classic sets of all time were released as well as innovative issues like the R318 Batter Up R327 Diamond Stars R326 Baseball Movies and the many oversized premium sets from Goudey and National Chicle. Perhaps no issue was more unique than the R304 Al Demaree Die Cuts. Featuring a checklist consisting of approximately 168 players and umpires these oversized die-cut cards featured cartoon bodies drawn by former pitcher Al Demaree with photographic portraits of each subject inset into the cartoon. The cards were intended to be folded to create a stand-up figure as part of some sort of baseball game. While a complete checklist may never materialize much more is known about the set thanks to a large discovery of 109 cards that surfaced in 2009 including 87 single cards (and 30 previously unknown examples). Despite the size of the find that barely had an impact on the scarcity of these cards as the 109 cards merely doubled the graded population of the cards. Today fewer than 275 graded examples exist including 3 copies of card #12 Evar Swanson which is represented here. An outstanding representation of a scarce and valuable card issue.
