Yet another piece that refutes the legend that Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner asked the American Tobacco Company to remove his card from the T206 set due to his unwillingness to be associated with a tobacco product this cigar band was produced in the early 1900s to market what would be Hans Wagner brand cigars. The bands are rare today with approximately ten known all of which originate from a small find of printers proof sheets that were discovered some time ago. This particular example was sold as part of the Copeland Collection in 1991. The interesting twiest to this piece is that all the known examples of the Wagner cigar band are unused perfectly flat in EX-MT or better condition. Clearly this example is one that was not flat and is certainly not in EX-MT condition. This of course raises the question of whether it was actually used somehow wrapped around a cigar for demonstration purposes or given as a gift. The answer may never be known but it certainly creates a puzzle for an enterprising hobby detective. Regardless an incredibly rare and valuable piece related to one of the most widely collected players in the hobby.
