Formerly known as "Scrapps Tobacco " the true origins of the cards now known as H.D. Smith & Co. Gum cards were issued along with gum by the H.D. Smith company of Cincinnati each die cut card representing a player on the St. Louis Browns or Detroit Wolverines. Over the years the die-cut cards have been extremely susceptible to wear both at the edges and "tabs" as well as to the reverses which are often seen with glue residue or paper remnants from being mounted in scrapbooks. As a result just 7 examples of any card from the set have been graded EX-MT with just two higher by PSA and SGC combined. This is one of them. Dave Foutz was both a pitcher and an position player for the Browns between 1884 and 1887 actually winning 114 games in just four seasons for the team (his 41-16 record in 1886 led the league). As an outfielder and first baseman Foutz was a lifetime .276 hitter batting .280 in 414 at bats in 1886 - quite a season given his outstanding pitching stats. The card graded EX/MT 80 by SGC boasts outstanding color and virtually no visible wear some very minor softening at the edges being responsible for the reduction in grade. Still one of the most attractive high-grade cards from this set known. Population Data SGC Population: 22 total graded 1 at this level 0 higherPSA Population: 4 total graded 0 at this level 0 higher
