Youthful Henry "Hunkey" Hines leans toward a low ball, in an unusual pose with good visual definition and bucolic studio backdrop. He played an amazing 19 professional seasons, finally hanging them up at age 42 for the Clinton (Iowa) Teddies in 1910. His "major league" career lasted just two games, both for the Brooklyn Bridgegrooms in 1895.
The PSA VG 3 grade reflects multiple tilted edges, slightly rounded corners, and toned surfaces. The card retains a clean presentation compared to many other Old Judge cards and offers a solid way to acquire one of its shortest-lived teams, as the St. Louis Whites played a total of about 40 games before disbanding.
This card appears as #226-1's reference image on page 267 of the Old Judge photography book by Miller, Gonsowski, and Masson. Love of the Game is proud to offer several cards seen in their outstanding work of research and presentation as part of our 100+ N172 listings in this auction.
