This classic, clear image shows the well-traveled Joseph Herr during his abbreviated time in Milwaukee, one of five pro teams to employ his services from 1889 to 1890. The name “Ed” Herr appears to be cataloged in error sometime since the release of Old Judge, as two men named Joseph Herr from St. Louis played pro ball during this era and could be mistaken for each other. Joseph Herr spent five years at various levels of play in the Midwest, reaching the majors with Cleveland and St. Louis. Echoing the name confusion on this card, Herr later “died twice” thanks to mistaken identity of a drowned body near his home, who proved to be someone else altogether (the real Joe reappeared soon after and lived on until his actual passing in 1936).

This SGC AUTHENTIC grade reflects tape repair of a creased middle section. Its main image remains engaging and superior to many other Old Judge cards, which often suffer from fading and edge damage. This “Milwaukee” variation retouched his original “St. Louis” jersey name to reflect where Joe played at the start of 1889. His short time there, just 26 games, could explain why SGC’s population report shows a single example, making this a great opportunity to net one of Old Judge’s rarer variations!

(Note that the Goodwin & Co. reference for Old Judge cards declared Herr's life as 1862-1943, and we rely on Baseball Reference's 1865-1936 dates.)
