#427-1 shows Nick Smith of the St. Joseph "Clay Eaters," who played in baseball's Western Association. When people talk about unusual team names of today, like the Skeeters or Trash Pandas, remember they could be "eating clay" instead!

The SGC EX 5 grade offers square and balanced edges, with good centering, minimal corner wear, and an above-average image for its clarity and detail. A small spot along its right edge appears to explain the technical grade, since it might be a tick higher without that mark. The SGC population report shows just one encapsulated #427-1 and this is it! 

This #427-1 pose was known and described in the Goodwin & Co. photographic reference book at writing, yet lacked an example image for page 387. The winner of this auction will thus own something those authors were unable to obtain!
