Southpaw Pete Somers ("Sommers" on Baseball Reference) joined the St. Louis Browns for their 1888 preseason and pitched enough exhibition games to garner five N172 poses, all as a hypothetical member of their staff. He failed to make that team and bounced around a bit for two years, next finding success for the Springfield (IL) entry in the so-called Central Interstate League. He continued to follow minor league paychecks into the 20th century, last playing for Terre Haute (IN) in 1903.
The SGC GOOD 2 grade penalizes Pete for residue and other marks on its reverse that take nothing away from its front, which presents closer to mid-grade. Edges show a slight tilt, decent corners, and a clean front surface. The SGC population report contains two graded for #428-3, each lower grade, with this rating as its highest!
Given its population scarcity for an obscure player, this card also appears as #428-3's reference image on page 387 of the Old Judge book by Miller, Gonsowski, and Masson. Love of the Game is proud to offer several cards seen in their outstanding work of research and presentation as part of our 100+ N172 listings.
