The Old Judge Series was issued over a four year period from 1887 to 1890 and contains over 4,500 possible cards, thanks to the myriad variations created by pose changes and team movement throughout that run. Despite all that variety, total examples for this specific pose and team are a short list indeed, with Murphy's #334-3 known as a single SGC-graded example, the card offered in this auction (PSA examples all appear to connect to his other three N172 poses).
This SGC VG 3 shows good borders and centering, above-average central image, and clear look at each piece of his uniform and the ball itself, almost snagged at upper left. The dark spot on its front more or less defines the low technical grade.
