Charles Hoover appears in five different poses for the N172 set, with this ball-in-hand being its most unusual composition. The majority of its image is well-developed and shows deep contrast and detail. The bright white backdrop might look this way on #232-2 cards of any condition, given such a one-note surface that blends into his light-colored cap.
This SGC GOOD 2 grade reflects general surface aging, corner rounding, and a penciled "#46" on the reverse, perhaps as a note from its original owner. Hoover's combined PSA/SGC population reports show just eight of this pose encapsulated in total, with none meaningfully better than this grade.
While the card refers to Hoover as a member of the Chicago White Stockings, he did not make the club and moved to the Western Association's Chicago Maroons, a lower-level organization. Charles spent his only major league time with Kansas City of the American Association in 1888-89 and can be found on two N172 poses with that city on his nameplate.
