While he spent time as a player with other franchises, Red Shoendienst is known best for his long assocation with the St. Louis Cardinals, whose red and blue tinted portrait likely came from their media guides and features its classic birds-on-a-bat uniform. Print quality varies throughout this set, with this being one of its better efforts in terms of clarity and registration.
This PSA NM 8 grade reflects a near-perfect example for its centering, square edges, and one barely fuzzy corner. Light toning on the lower right section could be all that holds it back from an even better score. The population report shows just five higher, so this will be tough indeed to improve upon!
Berk Ross of NYC issued 72-card baseball sets in 1951 and 1952, capturing a wide range of important stars, including the last "active" card for Joe DiMaggio in their 1952 set. (Joe had retired after 1951, which could explain why Topps left him out of their own 1952 set.) Cards for this set came in pairs, similar to 1951 Topps red or blue backs, so high-grade singles bear those distinctive tabs that once linked them to another player.
