Edouard Cyrille "Newsy" Lalonde was a two-sport star, playing both professional hockey and professional lacrosse in Canada while excelling at both. Playing predominantly as a center for the Montreal Canadiens of the NHA, he was a member of the team during their inaugural season of 1909-10 and is on record as scoring the first goal in team history. Canadiens captain from 1915-21, he was a member of the team in 1916 when they captured their first of now 24 Stanley Cup championships since the founding of the franchise. Notably, Lalonde was a goalscorer in the very first NHL game which took place on December 19, 1917, a 7-4 victory for the Montreal Canadiens over the Ottawa Senators. A prolific goalscorer, Lalonde currently ranks third all-time in points per game only behind greats Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. A Hockey Hall of Famer, Lalonde was inducted in 1950 and in 1965 was also among the inaugural inductees into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

This 1910 Sweet Caporal Hockey Postcard of Lalonde, #42 in the set, exhibits rounding at the corners and a few chips to the edges. A heavy crease is present at the lower-right corner and close inspection reveals what appears to be staining at the upper-left corner and above Lalonde's left shoulder. Otherwise, a gorgeously rendered example of this impossibly rare card. Graded GOOD 2 by PSA it remains one of only 14 graded examples across both PSA and SGC's population reports combined.

Please note: our printed catalog displays "RC" in the title indicating rookie card status. This is in-fact considered a second year card for Lalonde, consistent with his C55 issue.
