A scarce and visually striking issue from Allen & Ginter, circa 1888. N508 Sub Rosa Cigarettes show women in sports garb and situations with cheeky, baseball-ish captions like “A Chance for a Double Play.” Bright foil stamps advertise Sub Rosa, one of their cigarette brands targeted at women. (Those brands included Virginia Brights, which also appeared on 19th century sets.)
This PSA VG 3 grade reflects extra-rounded corners, a diagonal crease at lower left, and visible mark across one knee. Surfaces are otherwise in good shape and the gold "Sub Rosa Cigarettes" foil stamp still shines when held near light. Their population report shows four graded, with just one higher at VG-EX 4. (Note that "Sub Rose" is a typo on PSA's label, as the brand is "Sub Rosa," after a Latin phrase that implies secrecy or clandestine appeal.)
The N508 series is among the earliest tobacco issues to feature women in baseball uniforms, likely produced for store display and marketed toward a mix of female smokers and amorous men. They generated controversy in their day, since women rarely appeared in public wearing pants or athletic garb. Newspapers report men writing to Allen & Ginter itself, hoping to meet their models! This is a hard-to-find window into how gender perceptions intersected with 19th-century collecting.
