Willie Mays capped his 1951 Rookie of the Year campaign with one that transitioned midyear into U.S. Army service. As noted on his card back, Willie found a new home at training camp by the time this colorful pose appeared in 1952's semi-high series. After a season-plus serving Uncle Sam, Mays returned to the Giants outfield in 1954 and immediately returned to form, leading the NL in WAR (Wins Above Replacement) for 10 of the next 13 seasons.
This SGC VG+ 3.5 grade has all the hallmarks of a loved and treasured keepsake for some young Giants fan. It has modest corner rounding, the front sits off-center a bit southeast, and its back sits at 100/0 eastward. Its surfaces remain clean and borders even, augmenting that strong central image. Whatever its technical grade, this card retains the star power of Mays himself and any 1952 Topps star garners extra attention and love from collectors. This will be a key acquisition for any low-to-mid grade collection.
