Fantastic shot of Cardinals Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander, dated on verso to just a few short weeks prior to the 1926 World Series. Fresh to the hobby 5" x 7" original with Pacific & Atlantic credit stamping on verso that is largely obscured by full paper caption describing how the Cards are "fighting gamely to maintain their scant lead in the National League." Indeed, the Cardinals would beat out the Cincinnati Reds by two games to face the New York Yankees in an absolute classic seven-game 1926 World Series. Alexander famously shutout the Yankees in Game 6, only to come on in relief late in Game 7 the following day on no rest. With the score 3-2 in the Cardinals favor, Alexander struck out Tony Lazzeri to end the 7th, sat the Yankees down in order in the 8th, and retired the first two batters in the ninth. Ruth then walked on a 3-2 pitch and, upon attempting to steal second base, was gunned down by Cardinals catcher Bob O'Farrell to to end the series. It remains the only World Series ever to end on caught stealing. Photo exhibits a 2.25" tear that travels from the left edge to Alexander's right eye with faint creasing to the upper-left corner. From LOTG's recent Durham Find of Historic Baseball Photography. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
