On September 24, 1908, a team of old-time collegiates and amateurs assembled at the Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston to play a game against the reunited members of the 1878 Boston team (with some younger professionals added to the roster), one of the earliest "Old-Timers Game" celebrations with which we are familiar. The game included Al Spalding, Jim O'Rourke, Tim Murnane, John Morrill, George Wright, Tommy McCarthy and more, and the professionals beat the amateurs by a score of 7-5. After the game, the teams celebrated with a banquet at the Algonquin Club.
Presented here is a scorecard from that very game. The four-panel scorecard measures 5 7/8" x 8 5/8" folded. The front cover pictures members of the 1878 Boston team - surrounding manager Harry Wright (HOF) are, clockwise from left, Jack Burdock, John Morrill, George Wright (HOF), Ezra Sutton, Tommy Bond (two different images), Andy Leonard, John Manning, Jim O'Rourke (HOF), Harry Schafer, and Pop Snyder (two different images). The scorecard is titled "The Men Who Made the Game." Interior pages list the participants by position, leaving room for scoring.
The piece is extremely well-worn, with significant soiling and staining throughout. Folded and creased, there are multiple large tears and areas of paper loss; the paper itself is quite brittle and delicate. The game has been scored in pencil, with heavy staining on the verso. Still, an extremely interesting and rare piece, one of only a couple we have encountered in our research.
