A less-known part of Jackie Robinson's incredible story is that in 1952, he opened a department store in Harlem. Aware of the sometimes predatory behavior of white retailers toward Black shoppers, Robinson set a goal of offering high-quality clothing and electronics at lower prices than what was typically available in Manhattan. Robinson, who owned 25% of the store, partnered with Lou Oster of Bedford Clothiers to create a line of clothing, and his longtime friend Jack Gordon managed the store. The store remained in Harlem, across from the Apollo Theater, until 1958.

Presented here are two articles of clothing from the store, consigned from the estate of Robinson's Dodger teammate George Shuba. The collection includes the following: 1) Wool Sweater Vest: Soft, gray wool vest, the tag reading "Imported European Yarn," size Large. Somewhat yellowed with time, a few stains and pulls here and there, as well as a couple of small holes. The Jackie Robinson store tag remains affixed in place in the back collar, entirely intact. 2) Silk Necktie: Thin tie, pale blue with white, gray, and gold accents, with a few 1950s design flourishes that include a centaur. Brown The Jackie Robinson Store tag remains affixed and intact on the reverse. Some loose threads and stitching are apparent on the reverse; otherwise strong. Two pieces total.
