S.F. Hess of Rochester, New York, is best known, quite ironically, as an issuer of cards featuring teams from the California League, which eventually became the more familiar Pacific Coast League. N321, an 1888 release, is a colorful, illustrated, blank-backed set of 40 subjects. This card pictures Lou Hardie, a member of the original 1883 San Francisco Haverlys (see the Haverlys cabinets featured elsewhere in this auction), who wound up batting .223 in four major league seasons. Graded VG+ 3.5 by SGC, the card is clear and colorful, with a tiny bit of soiling in the left border. Corner wear is largely responsible for the grade.
