National Chicle R312 premiums helped promote their 1930s baseball issues and prove hard to find today, given the company's fading fortunes by 1936. A modest number of these colorful, paper-thin "cards" survived in top condition and many of those appear in this Love of the Game auction, including several of its distinctive multiplayer and action poses.

This action shot includes a fine example of Hall of Famer Pie Traynor beating a throw to third. The set's oversized (5 3/8" x 4"), paper-thin stock left them vulnerable to a whole range of issues, yet this in-game shot presents as near-perfect, with two touched corners. Close examination of the back shows a light ink ghost of its front, as a bit of wet ink from stacked sheets adhered to those above.

Recent research calls into question Augie Galan's identification, as Galan played for the Cubs and just two home teams of this era wore pinstripes, the Dodgers and Yankees. A limited number of fans in outfield bleachers could mean we're looking at an exhibition game, which makes its year and team matchups less certain. This adds a touch of mystery that could be solved with an original photo match. Regardless of that second player, this SGC EX 6 stands alone atop their population report!
