Bright, appealing ensemble of four Boston Braves, featuring Babe Ruth and Rabbit Maranville. The SGC VG 3 grade reflects corner and edge wear on an otherwise standout, accessible card of two legends, with Babe known around the world and Rabbit as a Boston institution. Thanks to the reuse of an earlier image, Ruth (40) looks a good deal younger than Rabbit (43), despite similar ages. Whether shown in New York or Boston, any Ruth card remains in high demand! The Bambino slugged three final homers on May 25 to reach his long-standing mark of 714, including the first ball to clear Pittsburgh's Forbes Field roof. Few achievements could be as fitting a finish.
Goudey experimented with 4-on-1 layouts for their 1935 Big League Gum set. Varied puzzle backs produced combinations labeled by letter and number code on card backs, as with "1J" for this Ruth/McManus/Brandt/Maranville front. Its back shows part of a team photo for the Detroit Tigers, 1934's AL pennant winners. Tigers players on the back are Alvin Crowder, Gee Walker, Luke "Hot Potato" Hamlin, Elon Hogsett, and Fred Marberry. Close inspection shows the Goudey artist added pupils for Hamlin, who was looking down in the original team photo. (This tweak also explains why he looks creepier than expected.)
