Gorgeous hand-tinted woodcut image as printed in the October 26, 1867 edition of Harper's Weekly, featuring the Union baseball club of Morrisania, New York.  As described elsewhere in this auction, the Unions were one of the most powerful baseball clubs in the nation in 1866 and 1867, losing many of its key players in 1866 but still winning the league championship in 1867 and again in 1868. The team was led by catcher Dave Birdsall, one of the first professional baseball players, and also featured pitcher Charlie Pabor and second baseman Al Martin. The woodcut is in VG/EX condition, with tremendous visual appeal. Some mild soiling can be seen along the bottom border, which has been manually trimmed, slightly irregularly. A wavy right edge is also an indicator of a long-ago trim. Quite attractive nonetheless and suitable for framing, an attractive woodcut image of one of the era's finest baseball teams.
