Beautiful and perhaps one-of-its-kind cabinet portrait of hitting champ and 1912 MVP Larry Doyle of the New York Giants, as photographed by Hall's Studio. PSA has graded one example each of six N.Y. players from this impressive, nostalgic set, with several offered in this auction. While some other images from this set became the source for tobacco cards of the 1909-11 era, the unconventional composition appears to be unique to this set.

This candid photo appears to catch "Laughing Larry" seated before a mantelpiece in mid-conversation. He would set a high standard for National League hitters for more than a decade and even beat out the legendary Honus Wagner in 1912 Chalmers Award voting after finishing third the year prior. The PSA VG-EX 4(MK) grade reflects a handwritten "Doyle" on its back and light edge wear to its matte. Neither of these detract from such a personable look at one of the Deadball Era's keenest eyes.

As a possibly unique issue, researchers used the cabinet production style and players included to set a 1908-09 date range. The 1908 date would make this his earliest available image and thus a Larry Doyle rookie card.
