Exceptional official scorecard from the Hartford Savitt Gems, an integrated semipro team owned by Connecticut jeweler Bill Savitt.  Savitt started the team in the late 1920s, and in the 1930s and 1940s during the Great Depression and World War II, brought thousands of fans to Bulkeley Stadium in Hartford to watch games against professional teams, barnstorming clubs, local teams, and more. Through the Gems, Savitt organized charity games for the Red Cross, the USO, and local organizations as well. In 1945, Babe Ruth played his last game wearing a Savitt Gems uniform.

Presented here is an official Savitt Gems scorecard dating to August 4, 1933, an unscored scorecard for a game against the Cuban Giants. Newspaper accounts of the game indicate that the Gems won, 11-1, behind the pitching of Hartford's Pat Loftus. A boxscore from the game is attached.

Advertised on the front of the scorecard is an upcoming game against Jim Thorpe's Oklahoma Indians. In that game, Thorpe, the team's coach, wound up pulling his team from the field over poor umpiring decisions. Thorpe is advertised in this scorecard, his photo (in Indian headdress) appears on the interior pages.  VG/EX condition, an interesting document speaking to the popularity of barnstorming and local teams during the Depression era.
