Rookie catcher Bob Schmidt played his best ball during his first season, playing 127 games and reaching the All-Star Game in 1958. He delivered excellent defense and modest hitting through 1962, when the demands of constant crouching caught up with his ability to outcompete younger guys with better knees. Even so, his acumen for calling games and managing lineups helped him find the second career that every player needed in that era.
