A tremendous memento of the championship team from the most famous pennant race in Cuban League history. Heading into the final month of the season, the famed Almendares were six games behind first place Habana Lions. With three games remaining between the two teams, Habana still had a 1 1/2 game lead, requiring the Almendares to win all three. After winning the first two games Almendares manager and Cuban Hall of Famer Adolfo Luque elected to use pitcher Max Lanier on just one day's rest (paying him $500 for the privilege) and Lanier pitched a complete game to win the pennant with a 9-2 victory. This beautiful Ramon Fernandez photo pictures the members of that great team, including Lanier, Luque, pitcher Agapito Mayor, and beloved Hall of Famer and baseball ambassador Buck O'Neill (middle row third from right). O'Neill was the starting first baseman on the team, his only season with Almendares (during which he batted a weak .211). The photo is clearly worn and stained yet displays marvelously . The reverse contains handwritten notations of player names, and displays visible heavy staining. The front presents better, with visible staining and creasing and an upper-right corner clip. All Cuban baseball memorabilia is particularly rare and highly desirable even more so when it features figures known to American baseball fans. Buck O'Neill is one of baseball's most beloved personalities and this rare photo documents his time with one of the Cuban League's greatest teams. An outstanding piece.
