To mark the start of the 1907 season, the Boston Americans planned a great celebration involving a band, with more than 1,000 invitations sent out to local dignitaries including the Governor and Mayor. The team also invited a group of former ballplayers residing in New England, including Billy Nash, Charley Buffington, Hugh Duffy, Tommy McCarthy, George Wright, John Morrill and Harry Stovey. While the team had finished deep in the standings in 1906 team management spared no expense in bringing fans out to being the season enthusiastically. 16,000 people were in attendance at the game, a Boston victory behind the pitching arm of acting manager Cy Young. Presented here is a handsome invitation from that day, a spectacular early artifact from Red Sox history. Measuring 7 3/4" x 9 3/4", the piece features a beautiful full-color embossed logo set atop ornately-designed typography reading "The Boston American League Base Ball Club requests the honor of your presence at The Opening Game of the Season Tuesday afternoon April 16th 1907 at three o'clock Huntington Avenue Grounds Boston." It is one of the cleaner and more attractive examples of this invitation that we have uncovered in our research, with some minor wear and age-related toning at the edges, along with a slightly irregular fold. Obviously these invitations were reserved for special dignitaries, no more than 1,000 produced, particularly rare today.
