Clear, well-printed back variation for Famous and Barr boyswear stores from the M101-4/5 sets made by Felix Mendelssohn. The photo shows Al Mamaux, a pitcher who logged over a decade in the majors and, later, the International League. Its SGC GOOD 2 grade reflects rounded corners, a horizontal crease, and back toning. M101-4 back variations can prove exceedingly tough, so this is an accessible chance for collectors pursuing them! The current SGC population report shows just two #107 Famous and Barr examples graded.
M101-4 and M101-5 are sets Mendelssohn created with 200 ballplayers of the mid-1910s. Card backs often featuring ads from a range of stores and companies, no doubt for their own marketing purposes. Contemporary advertising shows some stores giving groups of cards away as an incentive for in-person shopping and others sold their sets by mail order.
