Issued between 1914 and 16 the Type 2 grouping of Coupon Cigarettes cards is an extraordinary set with its subjects identical in pose and appearance to their T206 counterparts but the cards themselves much less plentiful and much more susceptible to condition issues. While the T206 cards were issued in a very wide geographic area the Coupon cards were issued solely in the Louisiana area resulting in a much smaller supply. The card surfaces were treated with a gloss coating not found on T206 cards - the result was a deeper more wet-looking color but also an extreme condition sensitivity due to a proclivity to chipping and surface cracking of the gloss.Presented here is a collection of two positively stunning examples of T213s from the collection of a very condition-sensitive collector with a keen eye towards midgrade cards with outstanding eye appeal. The first of Hall of Famer John McGraw is one of the nicest T213s we have ever seen. With a deep bold image and rich vibrant color this card exhibits both the positive and negative factors associated with the aforementioned gloss. Positive of course because of the impact that the gloss has on the color of the card. Negative because of two lines of surface cracking difficult to see in the scan yet apparent nonetheless - one on the left of the card traversing straight down alongside McGraw"s had and terminating in a spider wrinkle near McGraw"s chest. The second beginning at the bottom right of the card just near McGraw"s leg and stretching all the way up past his shoulder. Neither wrinkle interferes with the outstanding eye appeal of the card but both result in an accurate technical grade. The reverse is also bold and clean with remnants of the cracking on the card surface visible at the top right of the reverse. The second card in this collection of "Turkey" Mike Donlin is the ".300 batter 7 years" variation. Also graded GOOD 2 by SGC the card"s primary flaw is also related to surface cracking and wrinkling more visible and pronounced than that with the McGraw. All the wrinkling is on the right side of the card away from the player image. The card reverse while not as bold as the McGraw is clean and unblemished. These are two outstanding examples of type cards from a very difficult and condition-sensitive set. A wonderful addition to any type card collection.
