Zachariah Davis Wheat spent the first 18 seasons of his career patrolling the outfield for Harry Lumley, Bill Dahlen, and Wilbert Robinson's Brooklyn teams of 1909-26. A defensive standout with speed, Wheat captured a batting title in 1918, ultimately achieving franchise bests in several offensive categories including hits, doubles triples, and total bases. The presented Type I photograph is a fabulous portrait of the Hall of Famer posed at the Polo Grounds in the pinstriped uniform style of the early-mid 1920's Brooklyn Robins. Photo is fresh to the hobby, recently emerging from storage with remnants of a newspaper archive where it has remained until the time of this sale. This example has survived in excellent condition with unobtrusive handling wear only visible upon close inspection. Some toning is present around perimeter of verso, with credit stamping from Wide World applied at the center. Authenticated and encapsulated as a Type I photo by PSA/DNA.
